However, in certain situations and due to the claims of duty or the requirements of business, it will regularly occur that joys will need to be rejected and annoyances will need to be accepted. This is something that will be the case. Therefore, the wise man will constantly adhere to this concept of selection in relation to these issues. He will either forego certain pleasures in order to obtain other, greater joys, or he will put up with certain pains in order to prevent even worse pains."
