How to Create a Certificate Signing Request for Nginx (OpenSSL).

The CSR creation procedure on Nginx can be navigated with the help of the instructions that are provided below (OpenSSL). Please refer to our post titled "Overview of Certificate Signing Request" if you are interested in learning more about CSRs and the significance of your private key. If you have already created the CSR and obtained your trusted SSL certificate, please consult our instructions for installing SSL instead of continuing with the processes that are outlined below.

1. Launch a session at the terminal of your server.

You will need to access the system through the Secure Shell protocol (SSH).

2. Type in the commands for the CSR and the private key.

The following command, when executed, will provide a private key as well as a CSR:

Please feel free to copy and paste the following plain text version into your terminal:

openssl was instructed to be run with the following parameters: req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout server.key -out server.csr

Note: If you want to secure a certain domain name, replace "server" with that domain name.

3. Enter your CSR details

When prompted, enter the CSR details that are listed below:

Common Name: The FQDN (fully-qualified domain name) that you want to secure with the certificate, such as www.google.com, secure.website.org, *.domain.net, and so on. Other examples include www.secure.website.org and *.domain.net.

Organization: The whole, legally recognized name of your company, including the identification for the corporation.
Organization Unit (OU) refers to a department within your company, for example "Information Technology" or "Website Security."

City or Locality: The city or other geographic area in which your company was initially established as a legal entity. Do not abbreviate.
The state or province in which your organization is legally incorporated. The state or province in which your organization is legally incorporated. Do not abbreviate.

Country: The official two-letter country code of the location (such as the United States or Switzerland) where your organization is legally incorporated.

Please take note that it is not necessary for you to provide a password or passphrase. This field is completely optional but can be used to add an extra layer of protection to your key pair.

4. Produce the order, please.

Find the freshly produced CSR and open it in a text editor such as Notepad. Copy all of the text, including the following information:

——-

BEGIN THE REQUEST FOR THE CERTIFICATE

——- In addition, ——- END CERTIFICATE REQUEST——-

Note 1: Unless you specify otherwise, your CSR should be stored in the same user directory that you SSH into. If you do not do this, your CSR will not be valid.

Note 2: The ".key" file that was just generated is going to be needed in a later step of the installation procedure, so it is strongly suggested that you save it or make a copy of it.

Copy the full CSR, then navigate back to the Generation Form on our website, and paste it into the text field that is now empty. Then, proceed with the rest of the generation process.

Your order will begin the validation process with the issuing Certificate Authority (CA) as soon as your CSR has been generated, and the certificate requester will be required to perform some sort of validation based on the certificate that they have purchased.

Refer to our validation articles for information on how to satisfy the requirements set forth by the industry as well as the various levels of the validation process.

Proceed with the next phase of the installation procedure by using our SSL Installation Instructions for Nginx utilizing OpenSSL once you have finished the validation process and have obtained the reliable SSL Certificate from the issuing Certificate Authority (CA).

Generate a CSR (certificate signing request) using a CSR Generator tool

You may be required to generate a certificate signing request (CSR) for the website's domain name (or common name) after you have purchased an SSL certificate and the credit has been made available in your account before you are able to request an SSL certificate. This step is necessary before you can request an SSL certificate.

Note: If you are utilizing an SSL certificate on the primary domain name of a shared hosting account with GoDaddy, you do not need to generate a CSR; we will take care of that for you. If you have any questions about this, please contact our customer support team.

The manner in which you produce a CSR is determined by the kind of certificate you wish to obtain as well as the operating system and control panel that you use.

Even though we do not provide CSR instructions for a particular type of web server, our certificates are interoperable with all varieties of web servers. If the steps that you require are not found above, please consult the documentation that came with your server in order to obtain any more information regarding the generation of a CSR.
